Some people are born with naturally full lips. The rest of us just stare enviously at our lusciously lipped counterparts wondering how we can plump up our pouts without the pain and permanence of cosmetic procedures. Luckily, for those of us with finer lips, makeup allows us to create the illusion of fullness with just a few simple tricks.
1. Create a blank canvas
Lightly apply your concealer to the whole lip area including the outside of the lip line. Blend well.
2. Highlight your cupid’s bow
Using a white or flesh-coloured pencil, highlight just above your cupid’s bow where your upper lip forms a ‘V’ shape. By lightening this area you will automatically enhance these sexy little peaks, making them more three-dimensional. You can even apply the product onto the philtrum (the two vertical lines between your cupid’s bow and the bottom of your nose). Make sure to blend gently with your fingertip to soften.

3. Line with a soft neutral brown
Using a barely-there neutral brown lip liner, trace just outside your natural lip line all the way around your lips. Use the edge of your natural lip line as a guide to create a new lip line that is only just slightly larger than your own – even a change as slight as this will make a big difference to the overall appearance of your lips.

4. Light vs. dark
Dark shades make lips appear smaller so it’s best to stick to lighter or brighter lip colours in creamy or glossy formulations.

5. Create a shadow
Depending on your skin tone, apply a small amount of either taupe (for fairer skin) or dark brown (for darker skin) eye pencil just below the centre of your lower lip line (yes, an eye pencil under your lips!) and blend with a clean smudge brush to create a shadow that says, “My lips are so full they create their own shadow!” If you’re wondering why you should use an eye pencil and not a lip pencil, it’s because most brown lip pencils have a slightly red undertone whereas eye pencils are cool-toned, looking more like a shadow than misplaced colour. This trick is for those who feel very confident using makeup.

6. Reflect
Finish by slicking a light pearly gloss onto the centre of the lips to reflect light and create the illusion of fullness.
